Opal

Have you ever wondered what an opal is or have you ever seen one and you would simply like to know more about them? Some people may even be curious to know how opals are formed.

You can find out quite a lot about an opal by searching on the internet or even by looking up some books about all of the different gemstones available.

How Opals Are Formed

Opals are formed from a solution consisting of water and silicon dioxide, with the process occurring over extremely long periods of time. The thing about the solution is that it is supposed to have a rate of deposition of about one centimeter of thickness in five million years. This works out at a depth of about forty meters. The thing that makes the color in the opal is through the light which enters the stone and it is sent back out by something called diffraction. Silica balls are broken up into rainbow like colors which is known as a play of color and it has even been known as Fire too.

There have been numerous legends going around for centuries about these great and colorful looking gemstones. One legend that has been around for years is that the creator was supposed to have come down on a rainbow to bring a message about peace to everyone. When he stood on the ground, the stones were then supposed to have come alive and started to sparkle in the same colors as the rainbow and this was supposed to be the birth of the opals. There are many other legends and tales that go around, but this is just one of them.
